Obituary for Glenna Louise VanAllen

VAN ALLEN, GLENNA L. (nee SUMMERS)

Peacefully at the Wellington House Long Term Care Facility, Prescott on Monday July 4th, 2011 at the age of 82. Glenna Van Allen predeceased by Lloyd Albion Wallace. Re-married in 1968 and will be sadly missed by the love of her life Robert G. Van Allen. Dear mother of Susan Dale Wallace of Oshawa, Gail Louise Bourque (Jean) of Sherbrooke, QC, Cheryl Armstrong (Terry) of Pickering and Tammy Henry (Dean) of Lake Country, BC. Cherished Grandmother of Jennifer, Megan and Nathan Armstrong. Dear sister of Evelyne McDougall, Jean Sloan, Idena O'Neill, Hilton Summers and Leahman Summers and Carmen Summers. Predeceased by Isabelle Van Allen, Sidney Summers, Gordon Summers, Walter McCloud and her mother Mary Louise Summers and her beloved "Daddy" Lorne James Summers.

Anyone knowing our mother would know she had an opinion about just about anything and wasn't shy about speaking her mind; often much to our chagrin. Mom worked had during her life and always met challenges head on. She was determined, wanted everything done yesterday and never expected more of anyone than she expected of herself, although we may have argued that at various times in our lives. She was generous to those in need, even at times when she didn't have very much herself. What she was most generous with was time. Time to show you how to do things and most importantly, how you could have done it better. Those knowing her well will get a good smile about that. Mom made friends easily and always left an impression. She was of the mind that "if they can't visit me while I'm alive, I don't want them when I'm dead" On that note we are respecting her wishes and will not be having a visitation or service. She will be cremated and interred later this summer followed by a celebration of her life.

We would like to thank the many people at Wellington House who have given mom such great care. You all know who you are! In her last days when you came into her room even just to say hello, you could illicit a smile just with the sound of her voice, you were her family too! Caring for the elderly is not always an easy task. As a nurse I understand about working short staffed, overtime hours and trying sometimes in vain to be an advocate for your patients. We would like you to know that everything you do is so appreciated by family. We also appreciate having the Palliative Care Room available to share our last moments with mom. This room exemplifies total care for both the residents and their families and we hope it continues to do so.

A stated It was Glenna's wish that there be no Visitation or Service. The family have asked to have Memorial Donations directed to Canadian Cancer Society (by cheque or credit card only). Arrangements entrusted to the care of the MACKAY Funeral Home 416 Dibble St., West Prescott, ON (613)-925-3404
